My iPhone 3G S arrived today, right on schedule (and not a day too soon as UPS originally predicted). I gotta say, the preorder route with delivery was the way to go. No waiting in lines, not dealing with Apple personnel…just a little box shipped to my office. It was easy enough to activate and I was up and running over my lunch break.

First impressions?

The video camera is a winner. TJFKAK has this little pocket video camera that is super convenient and easy to use, and I think the iPhone 3G S is just as convenient, if not more. I used it to take videos at the golf course today, and the quality is surprisingly good. The frame rate is high enough so I can analyze my swing, and the camera performed well even in low light environments.

The only thing that I don’t like about the video is that it records mov files, which require Quicktime. I don’t like Quicktime because the files are large and the interface isn’t great. Still, you can upload mov files to Youtube so that’s good enough for most people, I’d assume.

The speed increase is also nice. I opened apps side by side next to a regular 3G, and apps did open about twice as fast on the 3G S. I also noticed that web browsing was faster, which is a huge benefit.

One thing I don’t think I’ll be using, however, is voice navigation. I mean, it is a neat feature, but there really isn’t enough payoff for me. I was deterred after reading the instructions on how it works and I ended up not even trying it.

The compass works, well, like a compass should. Too bad there aren’t any turn-by-turn GPS apps available yet to make full use of the compass and GPS.

The increased storage is also a big plus. My 3G was always near the 16GB storage limit, so it is nice to have that added cushion…although videos will surely be taking up a lot of that space.

The verdict?

Well, I have to say it was tough to be without my iPhone for a week. Really, really tough. I hate that a device has become so central to my daily routine, but hey, it has.

Is it worth the upgrade? Well, it depends on how you use your iPhone. If you take a lot of videos and don’t really need a super high quality camera then the iPhone 3G S is perfect.

The speed increase is a nice improvement, but unless you’re really strapped for time this isn’t a huge deal. Sure, things open up more quickly on the 3G S, but you’re only really saving a few seconds with each app, if that.

Storage may be an issue for some iPhone users, but if its not, then the 3G S probably isn’t worth the upgrade. I know several people that just rotate songs in and out as needed, and I think that approach with work for most.

As expected, Apple announced version 3.0 of the Apple iPhone OS today. I have three words for you all: cut and paste.

It’s funny that such a basic feature - one that’s been in computers since the early 1990s - could attract so much attention, but cut and paste is a key feature that the iPhone has lacked until now. And it has been a pain manually entering WEP passwords, website addresses and addresses, so this is definitely a welcome new feature, if not a novel one.

Other cool stuff? Well, stereo bluetooth will mean you can walk around with wireless headphones and listen to you iPhone. That gives you a 30 foot or so radius around your iPhone with pure wireless freedom. Not a big feature for everyone, but one that I’ve been waiting for.

3.0 offers better connectivity in general, actually. The iPhone will now be able to control and interact with accessories, which means you can use the iPhone as a remove screen for devices. You can also connect to peers over Bluetooth, opening the door for peer-to-peer apps.

MMS is supported with 3.0, but I don’t really know what this means. I don’t really use MMS, but I suppose it will allow you to send pictures and stuff to other wireless users.

Search is improved with 3.0 as well. Like the Palm Pre, 3.0 has a global search feature that will allow you to search everything from a single screen.

One other feature that I need to mention is push notifications. Now, this is an alternative to running apps in the background - something 3.0 will not enable. But it’s a decent alternative that will save battery life.

For example, running an IM app in the background will require constant use of the wifi or cellular modem - a big battery killer. Push notifications only notifies you when you get a new message, so a constant connection is not necessary. It’s a fine point, but an important one for an internet connected device.

These are all great features, which will be available for free to iPhone users and for $9.99 for iPod Touch users. It’s been a long time coming for certain features, but overall 3.0 promises to make the iPhone a more useful device.

Iphone 3.0

Rumor has it that Apple is poised to release details on its Iphone 3.0 next week during a preplanned media event for reporters and bloggers.

What new features will the OS have? I don’t know but other smarter people than I have guessed, Bluetooth tethering, multimedia messaging, robust search capabilities, simultaneous apps.

Apps we’d like to see: Cut and paste, Flash player, remote desktop to Mac OSX

Walmart to sell $99 iPhone?

The web has been abuzz with rumors that Walmart will start selling a $99 iPhone this Christmas season. The $99 model, according to rumors, will have 4GB of storage and will be sold with a 2 year contract.

This follows speculation that Walmart will start selling the iPhone on December 28th – a rumor that has largely been confirmed.

I can see AT&T loving a $99 iPhone. At this price point they’d attract a lot of new customers for their relatively expensive iPhone service plans. But I don’t see why Apple would undercut more expensive iPhone models. Sure, AT&T would still support Apple with subsidies, but I’m not sure that even a $200 subsidy would come out in Apple’s favor in the end.

I’m also suspicious about the price vs. storage ratio. Sure, 4GB is less storage than the $299 16GB iPhone model…but the 12GB difference in memory isn’t really worth $200. I mean, the difference between the 4GB iPod Nano and 16GB iPod Nano is only around $100. Either AT&T is gonna heavily subsidize the iPhone 4GB or Apple is gonna take a huge hit by dropping the price of the device by $200 for only 12GB less storage.

I call BS on this rumor, although I do expect that Walmart will begin selling current versions of the iPhone by year’s end. This should be a bright note for Apple stock which has been battered recently.

2.2 brings wireless podcasts

Apple released iPhone firmware version 2.2 a week back. There were a bunch of minor new features and bug fixes, of course. 2.2 also brought Google street view to the iPhone - although i can’t figure out how to use this feature. But the biggest improvement? Wireless podcast downloads.

Previously, you needed to hook up your iphone to your computer to download podcasts. This was a bummer if you were far from a desk and needed some new content.

With 2.2, you can download most podcasts wirelessly from the iPhone’s 3G connection. The only catch is the podcast must be less than 10MB in order to download via a cellular connection.

This is an awesome feature that is incredibly useful. Instead of waiting a few days to sync your podcasts, you can get whatever you want immediately. It’s awesome to download new content while you’re on the road or at the gym…it’s almost like having a radio.

My favorite podcasts come from NPR. I’m amazed that a public radio station has the resources to develop such great content. This American Life is my favorite, but there are tons of daily podcasts like Fresh Air and Talk of the Nation that are interesting and informative.

Aside from NPR, you can get regular shows like 60 minutes, which is great if you don’t want to watch the whole episode on TV. The Wall Street Journal also has a great daily news podcat that is a good source for financial news.

I also love the Engadget podcast. I don’t know if this is appealing to anyone else, but the Engadget podcast is really a few geeks just talking about tech products. Like, the had a long conversation about the RIM Bold and Storm…and if you like hearing people talk about phones, well, this is for you. Personally, I find it strangely entertaining.

In any case, 2.2 is a big update for the iPhone and you should all update if you haven’t already.

iPhone 2.0.1 update arrives

Apple released iPhone firmware version 2.0.1 today. It doesn’t appear that there’s a whole lot of new features in this update - mainly just bug fixes.

But that’s good news. 2.0 firmware is slow, buggy and at times incredibly frustrating. It’ll be interesting to see if Apple can resolve these issues, as it moves from the closed v1.0 software to a (slightly) more open 2.0 platform.
